Hunter's Supply is strictly about sport hunting,
stocking quality rifles and shotguns, gun safes, gun cases, hunting accessories
and apparel. Hunter's Supply aims to provide great customer service while
keeping our inventory stocked with the latest gear and Jawbone Custom Knives
crafted by Steve Long. Hunter's Supply also stocks nonlead hunting ammunition,
which is required for hunting in the California condor range, and we intend to
stock reloading supplies in the near future. We felt there was a need for a
complete, full service hunting shop and we wanted to do it right. We embody a
strong passion for hunting, and want to serve Monterey County with a shop it
deserves.
ABOUT OUR GAME COLLECTION
Our game collection is a generous contribution from the Armstrong family.
Maitland and Liz Armstrong were longtime Salinas Valley ranchers and
philanthropists who left a substantial bequest in their estate to the Arthur B.
Ingham School in Salinas to help the school's disabled students.
They also left another legacy
to Monterey County - a museum-quality collection of stuffed birds, fish and
animals they gathered over decades as enthusiastic hunters and sport fishermen.
Some of the collection went to museums, but the best specimens, including a
world-record mountain sheep and moose, are among several hundred items that were
displayed for years in the family's home.
After the couple died in the
1990s, the Armstrong Family Trust required that the collection be kept intact
and that it remain in Monterey County.
The stuffed heads stayed in a
dark, cool display room in the family home, until recently moving them to
Hunter's Supply as an appropriate home. Every rancher who comes in here knows
about the Armstrongs and their love of hunting.
The collection contains a
brace of black-tailed deer heads from deer shot on the Armstrong Ranch in the
1940s - both record specimens at the the time -- and exotic animals collected in
hunts all over the world: a polar bear, a walrus, an arctic musk ox, a Bengal
tiger, javelina from Texas, wild boar from Monterey County, coyotes, wolves,
foxes, wolverines, badgers and others. They shot every species of migratory bird
in North America. Among the Armstrong trophy fish is a 62-pound salmon. Every
year they'd go somewhere - Africa, India, the North Pole for the polar bear,
fishing.
Hunter's Supply reviewed the
collection with state Department of Fish and Game officials. Because all of the
specimens pre-date 1985, all are legal. |
